Early Entrance Program - About EEP. The Program allows qualified students as young as 1. The resulting kinship encourages more than academic excellence; it removes the stigma so often attached to giftedness by creating a place where these young students can develop and flourish together. The EEP provides the opportunity for these highly gifted students to begin their college studies early at Cal State L. A., and offers them the support, guidance and counseling necessary to prepare them for success at the university level. The EEP IS NOT A TRANSFER PROGRAM. Upon graduating, EEP students have attended graduate programs at many top universities including but not limited to Brown, Cal Tech, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NYU, Princeton, Stanford, Thomas Jefferson Medical School, USC, Washington St. Louis Medical College, Vanderbilt, Yale, and all UC campuses including UCLA and Berkeley. Each entering freshman class has a common Schedule of Curriculum including classes designed to simulate a normal secondary school curriculum. These classes include Science, History, English and Mathematics. EEP students must be on campus at least 4 days per week, and are encouraged to maintain a presence in the EEP Lounge to facilitate the development of friendships, engagement, and inclusion in campus events and activities. The students in the EEP are also encouraged to maintain the relationships they formed with their friends from their previous schools and often participate in their traditional school activities. Such normal activities include sports, dances and, of course, the prom. EEP students also organize many similar activities for themselves here at the university. While these students do not take classes with the EEP students, we encourage interaction between these two groups of highly talented young students. In 2. 01. 1, the Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science high school opened on campus. This presence of normalized high school populations on the campus allows the EEP students to blend in and go relatively unnoticed by the normal aged undergraduate students. Admissions Criteria. The Early Entrance Program may be appropriate for a student with some of the following qualifications: One who is not yet in the tenth grade unless accelerated by one or more grades, and is not yet over 1. June 1st in the year of application. One who consistently scores in the very top ranges on standardized ability and achievement tests. One who has a demonstrated ability to perform at an outstanding level in school. One whose educational needs will not be met in the school he/she is presently attending or would be attending. The student likely to be admitted to the EEP is one who: Demonstrates a strong desire to attempt a challenging educational program. Possesses adequate maturity for self- motivation, self- regulation, and appropriate behavior on a college campus. Has the support of the parents to undertake a program of radical educational acceleration. Has a history of advanced intellectual and academic achievement. Performs at a level indicating a readiness for college level work on the SEAA Talent Search pre- college exam and University entrance exams for specific disciplines. Displays appropriate need, motivation, and readiness for radical acceleration. Cal State LA's Honors College. In order to best accommodate their needs, EEP students are transitioned to the university. In order to qualify for the Honors College, students must maintain a minimum 3. GPA and meet other academic qualififications. Students who meet the Honors College criteria will have the opportunity to graduate with honors upon receiving their Baccalaureate degree from Cal State L. A. EEP Costs. EEP participants are fully enrolled students in the University, so their tuition costs are set by the regular fees charged by the California State University (CSU) system. Parents should refer to the. The student is responsible for purchasing their own books and supplies and the cost estimate includes these expenses as well. The cost and management of transportation is the responsibility of each student/family. EEP students are not allowed to room on campus; EEP is a commuter program only, and all EEP students must live at home with family and supportive parents/legal guardians. As fully matriculated students, EEP students qualify for all academic scholarships and loans available to any college student. EEP students are encouraged to take summers off after they are admitted. One- time fees (Summer of Application Year)Applicants must submit qualifying ACT scores; the ACT test may be taken on the Cal State L. A. Qualifying test scores are accepted throughout the year but students must complete the initial interview by mid- May, two weeks before the May Orientation. Qualified applicants must attend a seven- week Honors Academy in the summer prior to the intended entrance to the program (see . During the seven weeks, applicants will take two specially- designed workshop courses that are consistent with college- level material. However, these are non- credit courses, used solely to aid in the mutual- assessment of the fit of college for young scholars. The Admissions Process to the Early Entrance Program. Take the ACT or SAT. For the ACT, and applicant must score at least a 2. English and a 2. 3 in math. Preliminary Interview with the EEP Director. Most students are invited to complete a summer term of classes as part of the mutual assessment period. Attend the Orientation. The Committee may review all applicant application materials and may schedule meetings with EEP staff and/or any student applicant. The Committee convenes at least once in the fifth week of summer usually late- July/early- August to make admission recommendations. Applicants recommended by the FAC to be Advanced to Candidacy. EEP staff will present a list of these students to the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies for review. The UGS will then make final approval decisions for all new EEP students. Admission decisions notices are then mailed home to each applicant and these notices will include one of the following recommendations. To invite student to join the Early Entrance Program immediately (Advancement to Candidacy). To invite the student to re- apply. To conclude that the early Entrance Program is not a good match for the student. Students Advanced to Candidacy will participate in a Group Meeting. Once grades are posted EEP staff will complete a final review(s) and the UGS will approve students for admission and will forward the list of these students to the appropriate University administrative offices. The Student. Some qualified students may wish to have a traditional high school experience, and that decision should be respected.*Student assessments will include but are not limited to. Based on the radical nature of the educational acceleration and the varying levels of experience, academic skill/acuity, maturity and age, EEP students may petition for an extension of this policy regarding declaration of majors. While the term encompasses all aspects of hip hop music, it is most commonly used to refer to the instrumental, non- lyrical aspects of hip hop. This means that hip hop producers are the instrumentalists involved in a work. Modern hip hop production uses samplers, sequencers, drum machines, synthesizers, turntables, and live instrumentation. A hip hop instrumental is casually referred to as a beat, and its composer is casually referred to as a producer or beatmaker. In the studio, however, a hip hop producer also functions as a traditional record producer, being the person who is ultimately responsible for the final sound of a recording. History. But music was made all the same: the phonograph itself became an instrument. In the South Bronx in the 1. DJs like Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash used turntables to create a hurtling collage of effects. Later, studio- bound DJs and producers used digital sampling to assemble some of the most densely packed sonic assemblages in musical history: Eric B. The Roland TR- 8. The 8. 08 was heavily used by Afrika Bambaataa, who released Planet Rock in 1. Nunk by Warp 9 giving rise to the fledgling Electro genre. An especially notable artist is the genre's own pioneer Juan Atkins who released what is generally accepted as the first American techno record, . These early electro records laid down the foundations that later Detroit techno artists such as Derrick May built upon. In 1. 98. 3, Run- DMC recorded . The E- mu SP- 1. 2 came out in 1. The E- mu SP- 1. 20. One of the earliest songs to contain a drum loop or break was . Marley Marl also popularized a minimal style of using one or two sampled loops in the late 1. Dre with World Class Wreckin' Cru recorded 'Juice' and 'Before You Turn The Lights Out'. The Akai MPC6. 0 came out in 1. The Beastie Boys released Paul's Boutique in 1. Dust Brothers using an Emax sampler. De La Soul also released 3 Feet High and Rising that year. Their producer at the time, Prince Paul, mixed sounds from funk, rock, disco and even children's records. Their beats were much more structured than the early more minimal and repetitive beats. The MPC3. 00. 0 was released in 1. AKAI MPC2. 00. 0 in 1. MPC2. 00. 0XL in 1. These machines combined a sampling drum machine with an onboard MIDIsequencer and became the centerpiece of many hip hop producers' studios. The Wu Tang Clan's superproducer RZA is often credited for snatching the eye of hip hop from Dr. Dre's more polished sound in 1. Ensoniq sampler . With the 1. 99. 4 release of The Notorious B. I. G.'s Ready to Die, Sean Combs and his assisting producers ushered in a new style where entire sections of records were sampled, instead of short snippets. In the early 2. 00. Roc- a- Fella in- house producer Kanye West made popular the . This technique involves speeding up a vocal sample, and its corresponding instrumental loop, to the point where the vocal sounds high- pitched. The result is a vocal sample that sounds similar to the singing of the popular cartoon singing animals . West adopted this style from J Dilla and the Wu- Tang Clan's RZA, who in turn was influenced by Prince Paul, the pioneer of the style of speeding up and looping vocal samples to achieve the . Kanye West has used the . While some beats are sampled, others are created by drum machines such as the analog Roland TR- 8. Digital drum machines such as the E- mu SP- 1. E- mu SP- 1. 20. 0, various versions of the Akai. MPC, and Alesis HR- 1. Others yet are a hybrid of the two techniques, sampled parts of drum beats that are arranged in original patterns altogether. Another mainstay in hip- hop is the use of the Ensoniq ASR- 1. The Neptunes and the MPC 2. Some producers have drum kits all their own, such as Dr. Dre, Timbaland, DJ Paul & Juicy J, Swizz Beatz, Kanye West and The Neptunes. Some drum sounds, such as the TR- 8. See how the top national liberal arts colleges rank at US News. Although only freshmen are required to live on campus, less than 10 percent of students live off campus.Sampling. If sampling is the first level of hip hop aesthetics, how the pieces or elements fit together constitute the second level. Hip hop emphasizes and calls attention to its layered nature. The aesthetic code of hip hop does not seek to render invisible the layers of samples, sounds, references, images, and metaphors. Rather, it aims to create a collage in which the sampled texts augment and deepen the song/book/art's meaning to those who can decode the layers of meaning. In hip- hop, the term describes a technique of splicing out or copying sections of other songs and rearranging or reworking these sections into cohesive musical patterns, or . Dre, whose first gig was the DJ of Afrika Bambaata- esque electrofunk group, the World Class Wreckin' Cru. In 1. 98. 8, Dre began his use of sampling in hip- hop when he produced the N. W. Court of Appeals in Nashville changed the nature of musical copyright infringement by ruling that a license is needed in every case of sampling, where previously a small portion of the song could be copied without repercussion. Dre announced he was moving more toward instrumentation. It can be as varied as a four- track sequencer and a collection of tapes or a multimillion- dollar studio loaded with advanced sound processing hardware. Synthesizers. They are used for melody, basslines, as percussive stabs, and for sound synthesis. The use of synthesizers has been popularized largely by Dr.
Dre during the G- funk era. Modern use of synthesizers is rampant by producers such as Jim Jonsin, Cool and Dre, Lil Jon, Scott Storch, and Neptunes. Often in low- budget studio environments or environments constrained by space limitations, producers employ virtual Instruments in place of hardware synthesizers. Virtual Instruments are also now becoming more common in high- budget studio environments. Recording. The Portastudiocassette recorder was the law in the in- house recording studios in the 1. Digital ADAT tape recorders became standard during the 1. Digital Audio Workstations or DAWs such as Apple's Logic, Avid's Pro Tools and Steinberg's Nuendo and Cubase. DAW's allow for more intricate editing and unlimited track counts, as well as built- in effects. This allows producers to create music without the expense of a large commercial studio. Vocal recording. A primary alternative to the expensive condenser microphone is the dynamic microphone, used more often in live performances due to its durability. The major disadvantages of condenser microphones are their expense and fragility. Also, most condenser microphones require phantom power, unlike dynamic microphones. Conversely, the disadvantages of dynamic microphones are they do not generally possess the wide spectrum of condenser microphones and their frequency response is not as uniform. Many hip- hop producers typically used the Neumann U- 8. But today, many producers in this musical genre use the Sony C- 8. It should also be noted that many classic hip- hop songs were recorded with the most basic of equipment. In many cases this contributes to its raw sound quality, and charm. Digital audio workstations. The success of these DAWs generated a flood of new semi- professional hip- hop- producers, who license their beats or instrumentals preferably on digital marketplaces. Some producers oppose complete reliance on DAWs and software, citing lower overall quality, lack of effort, and lack of identity in computer- generated beats. Sequencing software often comes under criticism from purist listeners and traditional producers as producing sounds that are flat, overly clean, and overly compressed. Popular DAWs include: Live instrumentation. Before samplers and synthesizers became prominent parts of hip hop production, early hip hop hits such as . During the 1. 98. Stetsasonic was a pioneering example of a live hip hop band. Hip hop with live instrumentation regained prominence during the late- 1. The Goats, The Coup, The Roots, Mello- D and the Rados, Common, DJ Quik, UGK and Out. Kast, among others. In recent years, The Robert Glasper Experiment has explored live instrumentation with an emphasis on the instrumental and improvisational aspect of hip hop with rappers such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Q- Tip, and Common as well as neo- soul singer Bilal Oliver. Instrumental hip hop. Hip hop as a general rule consists of two elements: an instrumental track (the . The artist who crafts the beat is the producer, and the one who crafts the rap is the MC. In this format, the rap is almost always the primary focus of the song, providing most of the complexity and variation over a more or less repetitive beat. Instrumental hip hop is therefore hip hop music without emcee (MC) accompaniment. This format affords the producer the flexibility to create more complex, richly detailed and varied instrumentals, with less emphasis on vocals. Songs of this genre may wander off in different musical directions without the vocal constraints of the MC. Although producers have made and released hip hop beats without MCs since hip hop's inception, those records rarely became well- known. Jazzkeyboard legend Herbie Hancock and bassist/producer. Bill Laswell's electro- inspired collaborations are notable exceptions. Future Shock album and hit single . Relying mainly on a combination of sampled funk, hip hop and film score, DJ Shadow's innovative sample arrangements influenced countless producers and musicians. In recent years, artists such as RJD2, J Dilla, Pete Rock, MF Doom, Danny!, Nujabes, Madlib, Wax Tailor, DJ Babu, DJ Krush, Hermitude. Swindali. This may be a result of its varied and experimental nature; a single track can incorporate samples from many different genres of music. Due to the current state of copyright law, most instrumental hip- hop releases are published on small, independent labels. In part 3 of this bathroom remodel series, we covered tips for making necessary plumbing alterations. Get ready to tackle building your custom tile shower. Your shower pan and stall must be impervious: You simply cannot let water get to the wood. If you have a standard- sized stall, you can buy an acrylic or fiberglass shower pan, though you lose the aesthetics of an all- tile shower. How to Install a Shower Stall. Many homeowners are opting for the addition of a shower stall as a functional alternative to a full bathtub. Whether you're installing a shower stall to save space in a new bathroom. Install a prefabricated shower stall or construct a tiled shower stall? Let this guide help you. Installing a shower in your bathroom. Installing a Shower Pan Membrane Liner for a Custom Ceramic Tile Shower. For more information on installing a shower pan membrane liner. It includes instructions on framing the shower stall. How much should shower stall installation REALLY cost in 2016? Homewyse strongly recommends that you contact reputable professionals for accurate assessments of work required and costs for your. Installing a Mortared Shower Pan. Custom-fit a shower enclosure with a mortared shower pan. If the stall is larger than the membrane. Installing a Mortared Shower Pan; Tiling a Vanity. A shower can be installed in a small shower stall or bathtub with a plastic shower curtain or door. Showering is common in Western culture due to the efficiency of using it compared to a bathtub. If you want some kind of mosaic floor, you can buy a shower pan designed to hold mortar and tiles. Or you can build your own pan. Building a shower pan. Starting from scratch, the old shower is ripped out down to bare studs. With the plumbing done, the next step will be to put in a new piece of subfloor and blocking up the sides of the walls to act as backing for the vinyl liner. Ready to start building the custom shower pan. Keep this key concept in mind: Moisture travels through grout and mortar, which are not waterproof. Water must be stopped by an impervious layer before it gets to the wood. As shown as shown in this example from Oatey, the pan design is not complex, though it can be tricky to get right. Atop the plywood subfloor, you build a mortar base, sloping it at a rate of at least a quarter- inch per foot to the base of the drain. You cover the base with a vinyl membrane that runs up the wall a few inches. The membrane goes into the drain fixture designed specially for tile floors. Screw the top of the drain into the plate to the depth of the finished floor. On top of the membrane put an inch or more of mortar, then thinset and tile. The Home Depot and Lowe's have the membrane and special drain. Many tile stores also carry them. Pan- building guidance. The new subfloor and backing between the studs for the vinyl liner. The threshold in the foreground is made with a 2- by- 6. The first layer of mortar is in place, creating a . The drain is covered with duct tape to keep mortar out. Note that insulation, absent behind the old shower stall, has been added to the outside walls. Here are the pieces to the drain. The liner will go over the black plate and into the drain. The locking ring (center) fits over the four bolts and tightens down to secure the liner. The upper section of the drain (left) screws into the locking ring to match the height of the final tile floor. The locking ring is in place over the vinyl liner, ready to be tightened down. Moisture will travel to the drain through the weep holes in the top of the ring. With the upper section in place, pea gravel covers the weep holes to prevent them from being plugged by the final layer of mortar. Threshold: A 4- by- 6 chunk of lumber with backerboard on the sides and top makes a good threshold. Of course, you need to slope it toward the shower. When the tile is added, it will be about 6 . The consistency is more like wet sand at the beach. You can usually get this mix at a tile store. Tile: You can find a good selection of pebble or mosaic tiles for your floor at Lowe's and The Home Depot, probably spending a couple dollars per square foot less than at your specialty tile store. Shower floor is finished, but the marble still needs grout. Mortar 2: Your floor pebbles or mosaic are glued to a mesh backing. If your thinset is too thin, it will ooze through the mesh into the grout space. Make your thinset a little stiffer than usual, and be careful not to push too hard on the tile. If you sink a mosaic piece too deep into the thinset, pull it out, hose it off and start over. Backerboard advice. The Den. Shield backerboard is in place, with the joints sealed and taped. A black plastic cover protects the shower valve; the plastic box ($4. You will line your walls with . Some backerboards, such as James Hardie's Hardie. Backer, are not impervious and require a layer of roofing felt or plastic against the studs. Others, such as wedi products or Dens. Shield from Georgia- Pacific, are designed to be waterproof and do not need the felt or plastic - - though you do have to caulk the seams. The wedi company manufactures a complete system for building a shower. It is high quality and relatively easy to work with, but appears incredibly expensive at quadruple the cost of Hardie. Backer. Dens. Shield is only slightly more expensive than Hardie. Backer but seems easier to install. The wall's water barrier - - either the roofing felt/plastic or the impervious backerboard - - should overlap the vinyl membrane that extends up the wall from the pan so that any water will flow onto the top of the membrane. Whichever product you use, follow its installation instructions carefully. You need to be meticulous in building a custom shower pan, but it is much cheaper than using preformed pans and lets you create a shower to a non- standard measurement. Tile- laying tips. The tile without grout can look pretty bad. Grout smooths out the harsh, unfinished tiles. The tiling and grouting is completed, but door still is not installed. You don't want your bathroom remodeling to look amateurish. If you are a total tile newbie, the vast expanse of tile in this project could be overwhelming. If you are anxious about the finished look, you might consider a bathroom remodel contractor. If you decide to do the tiling yourself, here are a few tips: Buy a tile (wet) saw. Renting one for the duration of this project could cost more than buying one. Know your tile. Ceramic tile is only colored on the surface; a cut edge should not be exposed. However, you may be able to buy matching trim pieces. Porcelain tile is colored throughout, and a cut edge can be exposed - - though even with polishing, it may not look like the factory surface. Stone tile can be cut, and with some patience and a lot of sandpaper it can be polished. Be patient. Level your tiles and make frequent use of a straight edge. If a tile is not set level or straight, pull it out and start over. Be careful not to inadvertently put your weight on a tile that is already in place while you work on another. It tends to knock the good tile out of whack. Mosaic tiles aren't as easy to install as the television pros make it look. See the accompanying story on the trials and tribulations of installing mosaics. Next, part 5: laying a heated tile floor. About the Author.
